A new Blair Witch Project trailer has dropped to warn you that in 2027, "the Witch is back." Lionsgate is rebooting its Blair Witch found footage horror movie series once again. This time, with Blumhouse, James Wan, Roy Lee, and for the first time in 27 years - with two of the original stars of The Blair Witch Project 1999 as executive producers: Michael C Williams and Josh Leonard (Heather Donahue chose not to participate).
The new Blair Witch movie will release a year from now on September 24, 2027.
Long before Curry Barker's smash hit Obsession, The Blair Witch Project made horror movie history, grossing almost $250 million worldwide from a budget of less than $60,000. While there have been a few attempts to recapture the success of the original, it’s follow ups haven’t quite managed to fork that same box-office lightning.
Both Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 and Adam Wingard's Blair Witch remake failed to recreate the financial success of the original. Thankfully, for those looking to return to the woods, you're in luck. Lionsgate recently took to Instagram to announce that a brand-new Blair Witch movie is coming next year.
Blumhouse is producing the blair witch reboot alongside Lionsgate movies, and while plot details scarce, we do know that Dylan Clark, the filmmaker behind the terrifying horror short A Portrait of God, is set to direct from a script by Chris Thomas Devlin, continuing the current trend of major YouTuber horror movies.
Plus as previously reported original creators Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick and Gregg Hale are all on board as executive producers for Blair Witch 2027, alongside Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, who starred in the original found footage horror classic. With so much of the original team involved, this already feels like it's in very safe hands.
In 2024, Lionsgate and Blumhouse announced at CinemaCon that a new feature reimagining of The Blair Witch Project 1999 was in the works through the companies’ multi-film deal that sees Blumhouse reimagine Lionsgate movies. While speaking at CinemaCon, Lionsgate film boss Adam Fogelson teased “a new vision for the Blair Witch that will reintroduce this horror movie classic for a new generation.”
Here's hoping that, with the original creative team's blessing, this new trip into the woods gives us another found footage horror classic that'll have us trembling in the corner facing the wall. If it can bring the Blair Witch project back to its box-office glory while it's at it, even better. Until then, we'll be keeping our ears peeled for any rumblings in the woods.
