The record-breaking verdict is in for Mike Flanagan's Carrie series, but with a catch.
Flanagan has followed up his film adaptations of Stephen King's Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep, and The Life of Chuck with the first-ever Carrie tv series. Summer H. Howell plays the titular character in the eight-episode reimagining of King's novel, which brings the story into the present day and explores the impact of social media on bullying.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Carrie has debuted with an 80% Tomatometer score, the second-best for an adaptation of the classic Stephen King story. However, the score is based solely on reviews for only the first two episodes, which premiered at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival and Fantastic Fest, meaning that the average will definitely fluctuate once full series reviews come in.
The first Carrie movie, the one from 1976 directed by Brian de Palma and starring Sissy Spacek, continues to be the best-rated adaptation with a 94% Tomatometer score. The two adaptations that followed were not received anywhere near as well, with 33% for the 2002 television film and 51% for the 2013 version featuring Chloë Grace Moretz as the protagonist.
As of this writing, there are five reviews on Rotten Tomatoes for the first two episodes of Flanagan's Carrie Prime series, four of which are "Fresh" per the metrics of the aggregation site. Tessa Smith of Mama's Geeky hailed the new show as "a brilliant modernization of a classic story, Mike Flanagan's Carrie is a devastating tragedy about viral bullying, maternal love, and trauma. Give Summer H. Howell & Samantha Sloyan all the awards."
The full series reviews will provide a more in-depth reception, with the majority of the episodes not being factored into the above reviews. This will determine whether it can surpass the classic horror movie's crown as the best-rated adaptation, retain its spot in second place, or slip below the others, although the last option seems unlikely given their low scores and the mostly positive reactions to Flanagan's adaptation so far.
Along with Howell as the eponymous character and Sloyan as Margaret, the cast of Carrie features Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin, Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle, Arthur Conti as Billy Nolan, and Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross.
