Edge City was doing fine until a scuffle in the middle of downtown chaos sent a certain wooden mask spinning into a storm drain and Loki, standing there without it for the first time, started to understand what losing something like that actually feels like. Ryan Reynolds plays a god of mischief rapidly unraveling without his anchor, causing smaller increasingly desperate incidents across the city as he hunts every alley and pawn shop and gutter between here and the harbor. Stanley Ipkiss was not looking for it. Jim Carrey plays a man older and quieter and genuinely trying to stay out of trouble, still twitchy at the shoulders, still glancing over his shoulder at things that are not there, living the quiet life Cameron Diaz's Tina has been asking for since the last time the green face showed up and redecorated the city. Then the mask surfaces somewhere unassuming and Stanley's face does the full journey from recognition to dread to temptation in about four seconds and Tina says do not touch it with the specific exhaustion of someone who already knows how this ends. He touches it. The Mask is back wider and louder and more reality-bendingly unhinged than anything Edge City remembered, bright yellow zoot suit and polka dot tie and rubber-limbed cartoon physics tearing through downtown before Loki's chaos-trail leads him back to Stanley and two mask-wearers collide in a city-wide showdown that operates entirely outside the laws of physics. The tug of war over the mask itself does not resolve before the screen cuts and the tagline lands. Some masks don't stay lost.
Eight to ten hours on this one. Balancing Jim Carrey's loose goofball energy against Ryan Reynolds' sharper snarkier version of the same transformation took real tonal work. Multiple tools, multiple full passes. Every cartoon physics gag earned its place.
